Making the Switch to Compostable Poo Bags

Why plastic poo bags are a problem?

Plastic pollution can now be found on every beach in the world, from the busiest of tourist beaches to the untouched, uninhabited, tropical islands. Even when we can’t see plastic, scientists have now found microplastics embedded deep in the Arctic ice. Every day, it’s estimated that 8 million pieces of plastic make their way into our oceans. How many of them are poo bags? There are an estimated 9.9 million dogs in the UK alone – that’s a lot of poo and a LOT of plastic! It’s now estimated that by 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean.

So why can’t I use biodegradable bags?

We know it’s really confusing so we’ve tried to break it down for you! There are lots of different terms out there that confuses the consumer. We call this “green washing”. Biodegradable, degradable and oxo-degradable essentially all mean the same thing. Any plastic is degradable. The plastic degrades over a long period of time (likely longer than decades) and when it does degrade, it breaks down into smaller pieces. These smaller pieces are known as microplastics. Scientists have now found that microplastics can significantly impact the health of sea life and are now investigating the impact on human health.

How to choose a compostable poo bag?

When looking for a compostable bag make sure the bags are certified.

EN13432 means the bags are suitable for industrial composting.

OK HOME compost means the bags are suitable for home composting.

Can I put a compostable poo bag in a regular bin?

YES! Ideally, compostable bags should be placed in a compost bin. The compost should not be used on any plants for consumption but they are perfect for flower beds. You can even put the compostable bag in a dog poo wormery! If you don’t have a compost bin, it’s OK too. You’re still doing your bit by buying a bag made from renewable resources. Traditional plastic poo bags are made from petroleum based products, compostable bags are made from cornstarch – a renewable resource!
