Introducing Novel Stimulus

Adem Fehmi and the crew from Dog-ease have put together a three-part series for all the puppies and their parents in our fab community. The first part in this series is “Socialisation – Introducing Novel Stimuli”.

“We need to get our puppy used to lots of different stimuli so that it can be happy and confident around these things in everyday life,” Adem explains. In the video below, he introduces Nellie the puppy to five common stimuli: a scooter, a vacuum cleaner, a buggy, an umbrella, and a football. These are all common items that most puppies will come onto contact with, so they are a good place to start when planning your own exposure training.

When choosing additional novel stimuli to introduce to your puppy, think about what they are likely to encounter on a regular basis. It is especially important to include items that make a noise or have moving parts; these are the stimuli that are most likely to startle your puppy, making it all the more important that they become comfortable with them at a young age. By introducing your puppy to stimuli that they will encounter on a regular basis, you will help them to grow into a confident and relaxed dog.

For more information on how to socialise your puppy, take a look at Adem and Nellie’s video below.

Adem is an integral part of our DogFest team and has put together numerous sessions for us over the coming months. As the days and evenings get colder and it becomes harder to motivate yourself for a dog walk, why not check out his series on making the most of your dog walks right here.
